about

'Frieze' was completed in 2006 and released separately on netlabels Audiotong and Open Music in 2008. This was the 2nd album proper from The Last Sound and proves to be reassuringly difficult.

It was digitally free in 2008 and remains so now, though it might appear in limited physical form someday...

Random notes:

- The photo used for the cover was taken in 2003 in the then Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo (that small painting to the right of the figure is The Scream), and because it was so incredible personally to be there, track 5 is an attempt at describing the feeling of walking the corridors approaching the Munch room - and then standing in it for far too long.

- The 'Bretagne Frieze' was a horrific billboard advertisement, vividly remembered from the 80s. Years later the image was spotted again - turns out it was an album cover. The record has since been purchased and will remain unplayed.

- The album was started in 2002 and abandoned in 2006 as it became clear it was never going to be finished satisfactorily (i.e. with proper engineering/mastering, full guitar orchestra, dueling circle drummers, choirs, controlled explosions etc.). It was then released as is in 2008, so all it needed was a more realistic outlook and a couple of years to ferment.

- Despite endless tweaking and time-wasting spent on the rest of the album, track 6 was written and recorded in one day (February 5th 2006). The claustrophobic, wheezy sound throughout the track finally gives way to a phantom "cough" towards the end (though the sound is likely the scrape of something across the table while reaching for the button to stop recording).

- The 'Garden Of The Sick' in this case is St. Fintan's Cemetery, Dublin.

- Track 6 was included on the 2008 Dublin Electronic Arts Festival compilation, track 4 appeared in edited form on the 'Festering' compilation from Front End Synthetics, and track 3 comes from the EP of the same name.
